I'm going to start with Charity Hope Valentine.. played by one of my top 5 ginger idols, good old Shirlz Maclaine.
Sweet Charity has possibly one of the most uplifting endings in any film, ever. imo. I bloody love everything about Charity, she's a hostess, hoping to find a nice chap to rescue her from the sleazy world of dance-halls and basically having to be a cheeky saucepot for money (but not in a good way). She is relentlessly positive, sees the joy every bizarre scrape she gets herself into, and is never afraid to admit that she sometimes disguises her lack of direction by placing the blame on the 'fickle finger of fate'. She is also (briefly) mates with Sammy Davis Junior in sunglasses and a floral shirt. Marvellous. (I mainly like him because of that song about the Rhythm of Life, and the fact he's one of literally 2 black Jews I can think of. The other one is actually Sean Paul. Enough said.)
Style: Black shifts dress, red beads, shiny black top hat and cane, ideally. She also has the best wedding dress I have ever seen; bright blue with white daisies, glorious.
Attitude: My favourite thing about Charity is that a bit like me, she literally finds herself hilarious. I love her more for that than any of her actual jokes, she just lols away to herself like a loon, something I can seriously relate to. 'Wow, this place is sure full of celebrities. I'm the only one in here I've never heard of.'
She's also upbeat and hopeful at all times. When she hears the odds against her are a hundred to one she simply declares that 'Those are the best odds I ever had.' Having watched the film over and over again since I got the DVD, I plan, like Charity, to live hopefully ever after.
